The fashion world is buzzing with anticipation as the Met Gala approaches, ready to transform the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art into a runway of imagination and meaning.
Held every first Monday of May, this star-studded New York City affair isn’t just about stunning looks—it’s a celebration of style, culture, and identity.
And this year’s theme is sparking major conversation.
A Theme That Speaks Volumes: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”
For 2025, the Met Gala’s official theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” dives deep into fashion’s cultural roots.
This isn’t just a dress-up party—it’s an homage to the political and aesthetic legacy of Black dandyism.
The corresponding Costume Institute exhibition, inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion, opens May 10 and runs through October 26.
It’s all about highlighting how Black individuals transformed from being styled by others—often as status symbols during slavery—to becoming iconic tastemakers in their own right, carving out a new era of self-expression through clothing.
Star-Studded Hosts Set the Tone
Each year, a fresh set of celebrity co-chairs helps set the evening’s tone, and 2025 is no exception.
Among those leading this year’s stylish celebration: Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, actor Colman Domingo, rapper A$AP Rocky, and music legend Pharrell Williams—who’s also the men’s creative director at Louis Vuitton.
Basketball superstar LeBron James joins them as an honorary chair.
Lewis Hamilton: Driving Fashion Forward
Few male celebrities blend sports and high fashion like Lewis Hamilton.
Known for his bold and often boundary-pushing ensembles, Lewis is no stranger to taking risks with his wardrobe.
His looks blend intention, individuality, and message—exactly what this year’s Met Gala is about.
He’s spoken openly about fashion being a tool of personal liberation.
In an interview with Vogue, Lewis said, “Fashion is about freeing yourself… it’s about slowly, over time, evolving and learning more about yourself and how you want to show up.”
That mindset is visible in every outfit he wears, whether on the track or on the carpet.
His Boldest Fashion Moments on the Circuit
Lewis doesn’t just save his fashion-forward looks for red carpets.
He’s made F1 paddocks into personal catwalks over the years.
In June 2023, for example, he rocked a lime green Versace set—button-down shirt and fitted trousers—paired with black boots and sunglasses at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Just weeks earlier in Monaco, he made waves in a pink football-style jersey and floral print cargo trousers by Dries Van Noten.
Then came the all-yellow coordinated set he wore in Monaco—loose and airy, yet statement-making—with crisp white trainers and silver-rimmed sunglasses.
From Florals to Feathers: A Style Evolution
Hamilton’s style only got bolder as the seasons went on.
At the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix, he stepped out in Louis Vuitton lace-style co-ords adorned with embroidered flowers.
Later that year in Spain, he switched to a cream-striped linen look by Umit Benan, complete with chunky pale blue sunglasses.
By May 2024, his look had taken a dramatic turn—he arrived at the Monaco Grand Prix dressed entirely in black, but with feathers and sparkles that turned heads anyway.
And in Canada that June? Distressed stonewashed jeans and a silver sequinned hoodie. Talk about pushing limits.
Designer Touches and Custom Details
In October 2024, he opted for a custom cable-knit zip-up by Marc Jacobs at the U.S. Grand Prix, adding a giant floral badge and beige cargo trousers to the mix.
His accessories? Brown suede boots and his trademark sunnies.
Earlier this year, in March 2025, Lewis appeared at the Australian Grand Prix dressed in head-to-toe black—Jacquemus jacket, matching trousers, Rayban Mega Wayfarers, and Ernest W. Baker Western boots.
A Look Back at Lewis’s Most Daring Ensembles
Even years ago, Lewis was setting the tone. In July 2022 at the Austrian Grand Prix, he matched a bright blue knit jumper with coordinating trousers and bucket hat—effortlessly cool.
That same month, he wore a sunshine-yellow outfit by Homme Plissé Issey Miyake, finished with chunky black boots.
October 2021 saw one of his boldest ensembles: a multi-layered Burberry kilt set paired with Bottega Veneta boots.
In Italy a month earlier, he wore a co-ord covered in a colorful hummingbird print and styled it with lace-up boots and a beanie.
Even Anna Wintour’s Guessing What He’ll Wear
So what will Lewis Hamilton wear to the Met Gala this year? That’s the big question.
Despite popular belief, even Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour doesn’t know.
In a recent appearance on Good Morning America, Wintour clarified that while some celebrities seek fashion advice ahead of the event, many keep their looks a mystery—even from her.
Though she’s already seen co-chair Colman Domingo’s ensemble (which she called a “work of art”), Lewis’s look remains under wraps.
“I trust Lewis,” she said. “He totally knows what he’s doing.”
